MARINE-MONTH COMPETITION FOR OVERSTRAND LEARNERS – 2022.
Grade 1’s up to Grade 11’s, were invited to enter our annual Marine Month Competition for learners
in the Overstrand area. Dyer Island Conservation Trust, in partnership with the Overstrand
Municipality and CapeNature, once again after two years of lockdown hosted this event to celebrate our diverse and rich marine life of the area. October month was a national marine month. National Marine Month creates awareness of South Africa’s marine and coastal environments and the benefits that our oceans bring to our nation.
We would like to thank Celine from Bargain Books in Whale Coast Mall for their generous donation of fantastic marine life books. Thank you to Roger from Rossi’s restaurant for your wonderful food vouchers. We appreciate your support, to encourage learners to look after our Overstrand ocean!
This competition ran in four different categories with exciting prizes!

We would like to thank the schools that participated. The learners created Marine Big5 sculptures; wrote a poem about 3.1: The sea wind whispers in my ear, 3.2: Dancing with the dolphins, 3.3: I am a child of the ocean and an essay about 4.1 I put a shell to my ear, and this is what I hear…, 4.2 If I could breathe under water, for just one day…I will, 4.3 My plan to save the oceans.
They used their imagination!! Did research and used facts! They went crazy!!

This competition, aimed at enhancing the learners to understand the ocean systems, to celebrate our diverse and rich marine life of the area. Overstrand is known for pristine beaches, fynbos rich nature reserves, ancient milkwood forests and breath-taking sea views. Our diverse marine life, including sharks, whales, dolphins, African penguins, seals and numerous pelagic seabirds – choose these areas to stay, breed or calf, because they feel safe and protected here.
Finalists, winners and teachers were in for a great surprise, Marine Dynamics Shark- and Whale Tours, sponsored a Marine Big 5/Whale watching tour, on Saturday 3 December.
