Children’s Day is a commemorative date celebrated annually in honor of children.  In 1925, International Children’s Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare.

What better way to celebrate our local Gansbaai children, than inviting our DEEP Kids for a visit at APSS.

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust Environmental Education Programme known as DEEP provides young learners from the Masakhane Primary School with the opportunity to enrol in the three-year long programme. The programme is continuing to grow as a new group enrols every year. This allow for the second- and third-year students to act as mentors and leaders for the new group, adding another vital skill to the programme.

Although this community is situated just four kilometres away from the sea, many have never even been to the beach. The programme exposes these young learners to the field of science and conservation and serve as a forerunner for future skills training. The programme is structured to monitor and evaluate the impact and growth of each and every individual learner.

The DEEP kids learnt more about our three frequent whale-visitors in the Overstrand, the Brydes- Southern Right- and Humpback whales. They also had the opportunity to each complete a beautiful painting of these three “regulars”!
