On Sunday, November 17, 2024, Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, gathered close friends, colleagues, and family to honor Dr. Leonard Joseph Victor Compagno (1943–2024), a true pioneer in the field of shark, ray, and ghost shark research.
Wilfred expressed that he felt deeply honored to know that Dr. Len’s final resting place would be among the sharks he so dearly loved, close to Dyer Island. “Len was a mentor to me, and his dedication and knowledge about sharks will forever shape how we see and respect these apex predators,” Wilfred reflected. Wilfred also expressed his gratitude to Lesley Rochat for caring for Dr. Len in his later years.
The ceremony aboard Whale Whisper took the group out to experience the beauty of whales and sharks, while Dr. Len’s ashes were scattered over seaweed reefs and fynbos. As the group toasted to Dr. Compagno’s extraordinary life and legacy, they celebrated the impact he had on marine science and conservation.
Dr. Compagno’s contributions to shark research are immeasurable. Born in San Francisco, California, on December 4, 1943, he was a pioneer whose work transformed our understanding of cartilaginous fishes. His groundbreaking publications, such as “Interrelationships of Living Elasmobranchs” (1973) and “Phyletic Relationships of Living Sharks and Rays” (1977), established the framework for modern shark taxonomy, which continues to guide the field today. His paper “Alternative Life-History Styles of Cartilaginous Fishes in Time and Space” (1990) remains essential for anyone studying shark research and conservation.
One of his most influential works, the FAO Species Catalogue of Sharks of the World, remains a key reference in shark taxonomy. Additionally, his field guides, including A Field Guide to Sharks of the World and Guide to the Sharks and Rays of Southern Africa, have become invaluable tools for researchers, conservationists, and shark enthusiasts alike.
Dr. Compagno’s legacy is not only in his publications but also in his mentorship and unwavering dedication to shark conservation. His work continues to inspire future generations, ensuring a deeper understanding and respect for these incredible marine creatures.
“Dr. Compagno’s contributions to science and his profound impact on the way we view sharks will never be forgotten” said Wilfred.
