The Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) was invited to speak to the younger students (age 6 to 9) at Generation School in Hermanus. Gerhard van der Merwe, a long term volunteer at DICT’s key project, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, arranged the talk and sponsored some penguin pendants for each child.
Gerhard, together with Trust representative, Brenda Walters, taught the children about the iconic Great White Shark and the endangered African Penguin of the nearby Dyer Island ecosystem. Generation Schools endeavour to inspire curiosity, fuel knowledge and invite experience and encourage independent and critical thinkers, and there were many questions, stories, and some fun penguin waddles. Educator Kim Bawden later tasked the students to make posters about what they had learnt.
Special thanks to Kim Bawden and other educators at Generation School Hermanus.
