This past Saturday, Uilenkraalsmond came alive with community spirit and environmental action as nearly 90 dedicated pollution heroes gathered for a clean-up that made a real difference. Together, we tackled the growing threat of estuarine pollution—and the results were inspiring.
In total, 121.5 kilograms of litter were removed from the estuary. Among the most alarming finds were a broken windscreen, a truck tire, and various car parts, showing just how much human activity can disrupt the delicate balance of these important ecosystems.
Estuaries are critical buffer zones between rivers and the ocean. They serve as nurseries for marine life, provide essential habitats for birds and fish, and act as filters for pollutants. When litter accumulates in estuaries, it’s not just unsightly—it becomes a fast track for trash to enter our oceans, harming wildlife and threatening marine biodiversity.
By removing waste before it can wash out to sea, clean-up efforts like this one play a crucial role in protecting our oceans and preserving the natural beauty of our coastline.
We extend our sincere thanks to Gansbaai Tourism for their incredible support, and to every single person who showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and made this event a success. Your efforts not only helped clean the estuary but also raised awareness about the importance of keeping our natural spaces pollution-free.
Together, we are turning the tide—one clean-up at a time.
