At the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, we believe that conservation begins with knowledge, curiosity, and a love for learning. This year, our first-year DEEP Blue Ambassadors have embarked on an exciting literacy journey that combines reading with environmental education.
The programme has started with Vusa the Penguin, an engaging conservation storybook generously sponsored by the Southern African Conservation Trust (SACT). The literacy sessions are facilitated with the valuable support of Gina Boysen, whose guidance helps learners build their reading confidence while exploring important environmental themes.
Vusa the Penguin introduces learners to the fascinating world of African penguins and the challenges they face in the wild. Through storytelling, the learners develop their literacy skills while gaining a deeper understanding of marine conservation, biodiversity, and the importance of protecting our oceans.
These literacy classes are an important part of the DEEP Blue Ambassadors Programme. Reading not only strengthens language, comprehension, and communication skills, but also encourages critical thinking, empathy, and problem-solving. By integrating conservation-themed books into our programme, learners are able to connect classroom learning with real-world environmental issues, inspiring them to become informed and responsible stewards of the natural world.
As the programme progresses, learners will continue exploring a variety of conservation storybooks that cover different environmental topics. Each book will provide new opportunities to improve literacy while fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature and wildlife.
