On 25 April, community members gathered at Gansbaai Caravan Park to celebrate Earth Day under the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” while also marking World Penguin Day—a day dedicated to renewing our commitment to protecting all 19 penguin species found across the Southern Hemisphere. The event highlighted the urgent need to take action against habitat degradation, climate change, and the many threats facing our marine ecosystems.
The clean-up was a great success, with 50 volunteers coming together to make a meaningful difference in our coastal environment. Among the participants were the passionate DEEP Blue Ambassadors, who continue to lead by example and inspire responsible environmental stewardship among young people in our community. Their enthusiasm and dedication showed that collective action, no matter how small, can have a powerful impact.

We were also proud to have Gansbaai Tourism join us for this important initiative. Their support demonstrates the value of partnerships in protecting our natural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism within our region.
Together, the volunteers collected an impressive 91 kilograms of waste, preventing harmful litter from entering the ocean and threatening marine wildlife, including seabirds, seals, and penguins. Every piece of waste removed helps create a safer, cleaner environment for the species that depend on healthy oceans to survive.

This event reminded us that protecting our planet requires ongoing commitment, teamwork, and education. By working together, we can safeguard our coastline and ensure a brighter future for marine life.
Our power truly shapes our planet.
