Arbour Week is a time for South Africans to celebrate the importance of trees and forests in our environment and communities. This year, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust partnered with the Grootbos Foundation to mark the occasion with a meaningful initiative: planting 25 trees for 2025 under the theme “Our Forest – Our Future.”

Together with learners and educators from Gansbaai Academia, Masakhane Primary School, Gansbaai Primer, and the Masakhane Hub, both organisations brought young and old together to take part in hands-on conservation. Little and big hands alike worked side by side to plant indigenous trees that will provide shade, shelter, and clean air for years to come.

Among the species planted was the iconic Milkwood Tree, which has been recognised as the Tree of the Year 2025. Known for its cultural significance, resilience, and longevity, the Milkwood serves as a powerful symbol of strength and continuity — values we hope to inspire in the next generation of conservation leaders.
Tree planting goes beyond beautifying school grounds and community hubs. Trees play a critical role in:
-
Combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
-
Protecting biodiversity by creating habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife.
-
Supporting water cycles by preventing soil erosion and improving groundwater recharge.
-
Creating healthier learning spaces where children can connect with nature daily.
Through activities like these, learners not only contribute to a greener community but also gain an opportunity to engage in environmental education — building awareness of how their actions today can shape a more sustainable tomorrow.
This project directly supports several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
-
SDG 13 – Climate Action: By mitigating climate change through tree planting.
-
SDG 15 – Life on Land: By protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems.
-
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: By bringing together community partners for a shared purpose.
-
SDG 4 – Quality Education: By engaging youth in environmental learning and conservation activities.
Every tree planted this Arbour Week represents an investment in our collective future. As these trees grow, they will stand as living reminders of the power of collaboration and community action in creating positive change.
Together, we are growing a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for the people and wildlife of Gansbaai and beyond.
