Kleinbaai, South Africa – 8 August 2025 – This year, our celebration of World Ranger Day came with a splash – quite literally! While the official day falls on 31 July, rough seas postponed our plans, so we marked this special occasion on 8 August with calmer waters and brighter skies.

Marine Dynamics and the Dyer Island Conservation Trust were honoured to host 15 CapeNature rangers from the Overberg region for an unforgettable Marine Big 5 whale-watching adventure. This was our way of recognising their tireless commitment to protecting South Africa’s natural heritage.

We were joined by members of the CapeNature Management Team, including Dr Alan Wheeler, Landscape Manager; Reserve Manager, Andre Marais; and Overberg Landscape Unit Manager, Johan Burger. Dr Wheeler expressed heartfelt thanks to the rangers, acknowledging their dedication to safeguarding our environment for future generations.

“This is our way of thanking the CapeNature rangers for dedicating their lives to the protection of our natural environment,” said Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. “The Trust works closely with our conservation partner, CapeNature, as the dedicated custodians of the marine environment in the Greater Dyer Island area. Our Seabird and African Penguin Ranger on Dyer Island, Lwando Baleni, also completed his training through CapeNature.”

Recently awarded the Marine Impact Award at the Experience Africa Travel Conference in London, Marine Dynamics continues to set the standard for responsible eco-tourism that benefits Africa’s marine and coastal ecosystems – and the communities that depend on them.

As we look back on this special celebration, we’re reminded that conservation is a team effort. On this day, our team extended far beyond the harbour – it stretched into every corner of South Africa’s wild places, where rangers work every day to ensure our natural treasures remain for future generations to enjoy.
