Four of our Dyer Island Conservation Trust Environmental Education Programme (DEEP) alumni students were selected to join the children’s reality series Roughing It Out (SABC 2). In the series, contestants are removed from the comfort of urban living and immersed into nature.  A series of adrenalin-fuelled eco-challenges test their mental and physical skills.

Dyer Island Conservation Trust educator Pinkey Ngewu, took the students to Cape Town where they started their two-week experience. The students have completed their three-year DEEP programme while attending the Mashakane Primary School.  They are now learners at the Gansbaai Academy. They remain active members of the DEEP Club, the club allows alumni of the DEEP programme the opportunity to retain their interest in marine conservation and to assist them with the Marine Sciences programme being run at the school.

For the past decade, the Trust has worked with InSync Productions, the production team for the programme. Our projects and programmes have featured in various previous episodes. This is the sixth series of the programme that is being filmed in the Western Cape.
