Runway show, organized by the DEEP BLUE AMBASSADOR students, spotlights sustainable fashion.

Students from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust Environmental Programme known as DEEP, up-cycled trash bags, tissue paper, cardboard—even bubble wrap—into fashion-forward creations for their fourth-annual Trashion Show on August 26th, raising awareness about sustainable fashion.

Pinkey Ngewu of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust hosted the event, entertaining a crowd of over 950 Masakhane students and parents that came out to support the style competition featuring a runway show of 27 designs, presentation by two DEEP learners Nizole Mehlwana and Thinama Desemela and music performance by the DEEP learners.

Trashion Fashion Show is a fun, creative competition in which participants use their imagination and design skills to create and exhibit a wearable garment using materials that otherwise would be discarded. The focus of the show is fusing trash and fashion. Trashion promotes waste-reduction and consumption alternatives through thoughtful use of reusable materials, fashion, and design.

The winners were; Girls 1. Thinama Desemela, 2. Inam Gwebu, 3.  Inako Zuzani

Boys: 1. Liqhame Kometsi, 2. Imange Phakade,3. Inam Mnqayi

The judges were Ms Nicola Immelmann of Marine Dynamics, Ms Votiswa Mahlanza of Department of Fishery Forestry and Environment (Marine & Coastal Monitor) and Ms Nobesuthu Ntsomi from the Masakhane Primary School.

“The objective of Trashion Show was to give a platform for students to exercise creativity in regards to fashion and sustainability,” sophomore and head organizer Irene Kim said. “By making outfits using recycled materials, participants are able to reuse and refashion trash into something beautiful and wearable while reducing waste, says Pinkey Ngewu.”
